Helpful Head Lice Home Remedies

A quick search on the internet about effective head lice treatments, and you’ll soon find forum after forum filled with comments from frustrated parents, who simply want rid of this human parasite out of their home once and for all. If you feel that you are at the end of your tether with these critters, then maybe it’s time you started to look at head lice home remedies, instead of over the counter products.

What many parents do not realize is that over the counter products often contain pesticides! If you’re like me, worried about commercial pesticides used when growing fruit and vegetables, then the idea of using pesticides on the head of a child is almost frightening! Even if they are deemed ‘safe’ for humans, it’s understandable that many parents would rather seek alternative solutions. Some alternative treatments have been passed down from generation to generation; they have been tried and tested through actual experience far more than chemical products; and, most importantly, they are known for being affordable and effective treatments against an infestation!

Head Lice Home Remedies that Work

* Nit Comb – The old faithful friend of any parent trying to remove an infestation of parasitic insects. This should be the only anti-infestation product you absolutely need to purchase from a pharmacy! Only buy combs with metal teeth finely spaced apart, as these are the most durable and most effective. Electronic combs are also useful, but they are a little more expensive. This one tool alone could make a world of difference, but combing the hair thoroughly can be a time consuming task. It is better to use the comb alongside other treatments, alternative or medical, to ensure the pesky parasites are removed completely.
* The ‘Smothering’ Technique – This method is a little messy, to say the least; however, it is known as being one of the most effective alternative home treatments. Smother the hair thoroughly with a thick viscous substance. You could try baby oil, Vaseline or mayonnaise. Apply the substance very liberally to the hair, ensuring that all the hair is well soaked. Use a shower cap to seal in the mix, and leave to work overnight. Rinse the hair well in the morning. Start with a good rinse of white vinegar then wash with a medicated shampoo, and condition with a separate conditioner. You MUST then use your nit comb, and use the right technique, to clear away dead or dying insects as well as their eggs or nits.
* Treat the Home - Parents often complain that despite their best efforts, the parasites keep reappearing and infesting the family. More often than not, it’s because parents have only treated family members, and not the home itself. Your treatment plan should include a treatment of your home, as well as the host. Washing and tumble-drying all bedding, clothes, linen and towels on high heats will ensure that any parasites or nits living in these items will be killed.
Medications, treatments, and products will only be effective if your children are aware of how they caught the parasitic insects in the first place. By ensuring they don’t make the same mistake again, you will prevent any infestation from reappearing in your home.
