Killing Head Lice With Home Remedies
As I write this article, this question comes to mind: Why would any clear thinking person choose to subject their children to toxic pesticides or insecticides to kill head lice when so many non-toxic head lice home remedies exist?
I mean, is this not unwise?
For me, it’s a no-brainer. The medicos would like us to think that home remedies are ineffective, when quite the opposite is true. No one should be using toxic substances to rid themselves of lice-or any other type of condition or infestation-toxic or not.
How can that possibly make any sense? I mean, for example, if you have ingested one poison, what would be the point in ingesting another poison. You would only exacerbate the effects of the first one.
And on top of all of that, since head lice infestations are so prevalent-and since the lice are developing immunity to the toxic substances that have been used for years to extricate them, why in the world would anyone be so dense as to voluntarily subject their children to those poisons?
I get the feeling that people today feel that something has to be “new and improved” (advertising brainwashing?) in order to be effective. Wise up, folks. There is a very good reason that the old remedies are still used-they work!
But the tide seems to be turning (albeit slowly), since there seems to be a trend for the companies who are in it for the profit to come up with safer, more natural things that actual seem to work. But guess what? Yep, they contain the home remedies, repackaged and sold under their brand names. I mean, they wouldn’t want to let you in on the secret that you can pick up these ingredients yourself at health food stores, because that would mean that their profit would evaporate.
For instance, there is a product out there that is wholly natural, containing anise oil, coconut oil, and ylang ylang. It’s labeled “HairClean 1-2-3.” I understand that it’s pretty simple to use, and so it is a step in the right direction. Another plus about this product is that it is packaged as a kit, along with a nit comb that is made of metal and has a long-tooth design, which is also another positive step.
But you’re reading this because you wish to learn about killing head lice with effective home remedies.
The absolutely cheapest, most effective way to eradicate these lice is to employ Vaseline, cover the hair and scalp thoroughly. What this does is to actually suffocate these minute critters, because their breathing holes get coated, effectively cutting off their supply of oxygen. Of course, you have to cover the hair with a shower cap or other plastic covering that will prevent your pillow from getting all gooey.
The other thing is that it is important to leave the petroleum jelly on the hair for at least eight hours-longer won’t hurt anything-to be sure the lice don’t “rise again,” because they have the uncanny ability to go into a yoga-like state where they have no need to breathe for several hours, so the longer the better here.
The worse thing about using Vaseline is that it’s rather tedious to get out of your hair. But if you grab a handful of absorbent paper towels and squeeze the hair with them, that will reduce the number of times you have to shampoo. Also, adding vinegar as you go helps cut the grease.
As with any other treatment, the final step should be to use a good head lice comb to be sure all the nits are gone, because if you miss any, you will find that they will hatch out in 7-10 days, so be diligent with this step. Use a good light.
Still another method used to smother lice is to mix 3 TBS of olive oil, 1 tsp. of eucalyptus oil, and 1 tsp. of tea tree oil (lice hate this stuff) to your shampoo and distribute it evenly through the hair, giving special attention to the scalp.
Now, this one is said to kill all the lice after only half an hour, but it would still be a good idea to leave it on as long as you can before moving on to the combing procedure.
And this is one that I’ve heard works well, but I’ve never tried it, and that is to get some raw almonds and soak 10-12 of them in water at room temperature, just enough to cover the nuts. After an hour or so, grind the nuts into a paste and add 3-4 TBS of fresh squeezed lemon juice. Work it into the hair and scalp thoroughly and then let it dry right on the hair for two hours. Then just wash it out using room temperature water before finishing with the nit comb. Sorry, but there is just no way to avoid this part of getting rid of head lice!
Lastly, I’ve only recently heard about a new formulation named Ulesfia that is being prescribed, and it contains no insecticide or pesticide. The reason I mention it here is that, supposedly, you can shampoo all the “dead” lice out after only 10 minutes. It’s purported to work that quickly, but still, you need to use it again after 7-10 days to be sure… and of course, you have to use the fine-tooth comb after the shampoo, no getting around it!

Head Lice Home Remedies
There are many head lice treatments out there. Some can be bought over-the-counter, others require a prescription. Many people worry about traditional methods as they contain chemicals and pesticides and while some of them can do the job, they can leave dangerous side effects. Research is now showing that many of these chemical methods are no longer working as the lice are becoming immune to them. That is why many people are choosing home remedies.
People who are worried about using dangerous chemicals and pesticides can and should opt to go with a home remedy solution. There are many options, which include white vinegar, tea tree oil and oil-based products (mayonnaise and olive oil). Home remedies are just as, if not more, effective than using traditional methods.
Whichever home remedy treatment you go with you should remember that nit picking must be a part of any solution. Nits are lice eggs and without their removal you are still going to have a problem.
I have listed below a couple of the more common solutions:
White Vinegar
White vinegar can be a good solution to loosening the nits and lice so you can use a nit comb to remove them. Vinegar will not kill the lice or nits.
To use, soak the hair with vinegar then place a towel that has been soaked in vinegar on the head for at least 1 hour. After an hour remove the towel start using a nit comb to remove the nits and lice. Take your time as this can be a tedious process.
Oil-based Treatments (Olive oil or Mayonnaise)
Cover the head thoroughly with olive oil or mayonnaise. Take your time and make sure it really is covered from the end of the hair all the way down to the scalp.
Use a shower cap or plastic wrap and cover the entire head. You or your child may look a little silly but this is important.
Now, with the cap or plastic wrap on, briefly blow dry the hair with hot air. This will assist in killing the lice.
Leave the cap on for at least an hour, 2 hours would be ideal.
Remove the cap and use a nit comb and thoroughly comb the hair. Take your time!
Shampoo the hair with your regular shampoo. It may take a few shampoos to remove all the mayonnaise or olive oil.
Use your nit comb again and comb through the hair removing any remaining lice and nits.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is distilled from the leaves and branches of the Myrtle tree. The best way to use this method is to add five to ten drops of pure tree oil into a small amount of baby shampoo or regular shampoo. Make sure the shampoo you are using is free from conditioner, detangler or any other oils.
Shampoo the hair thoroughly, cover the hair from the end of the hair to the scalp. You may want to add a little bit of olive oil into this treatment. Put a a shower cap on and let sit for 1 hour. After an hour remove the cap and wash the hair again with regular shampoo to get all of the treatment out. Again, it may take a few shampoo.

Lice Cures – A Home Remedy
If your family has ever had to tackle head lice, and you’ve searched endlessly for lice cures that work, you know very well how frustrating the process can be. This can be even more of a nightmare if you have tried several different, over the counter; lice cures that failed to rid your family of lice.
If you use an over the counter lice cure, you could end up spending hundreds of dollars every time someone in the house brings home head lice, and then there is a chance that the treatments won’t even work.
A better alternative may be to try a home remedy. Most of the time, home remedies are much less expensive, safer and more effective for killing lice. There are several, safe, non-toxic home remedies that you may wish to try before sinking hundreds of dollars into over the counter, or prescription lice cures.
Of the many lice cures that are, one home remedy that has been recommended by pediatricians is the use of real mayonnaise. To use mayonnaise as a lice cure you must saturate the hair and scalp in mayonnaise, and then cover the head with a shower cap. The treatments must be kept on for several hours.
When it is time to remove the mayonnaise, you simply wash the hair with dish soap a couple of times, and then use a specially designed comb to remove the dead lice and nits. After treatment, it will be necessary to thoroughly clean all of the surfaces in the home. Vacuum all carpets and furniture; wash bedding, clothes and coats. Anything that cannot be washed should be stored in an airtight plastic bag for at least two weeks.
The process should be repeated every four days for about two weeks to ensure that the head lice infestation is under control.
There are several home remedies that are said to work good as lice cures; they include using olive oil, or tea tree oil as apposed to mayonnaise, and regular use of a shampoo that contains coconut oil is suppose to work wonders for keeping your household free of head lice.
The most important step you can take in preventing head lice infestation in your home is to educate your children on the risks of sharing personal items, such as brushes and hats, with other children. Head lice spreads by the hair having physical contact with a louse found on clothing objects, furniture, combs, etc.
If your child is sent home from school with head lice, don’t panic. With some careful research are sure to find good lice cures that works.
