Head Lice Home Remedies – Fast, Natural Lice Treatments You Can Use Today!
Treating head lice should be taken extremely seriously. It should be approached in the correct way. Head lice home remedies have become very popular treatment for lice ever the past few years even though there are still many prescription and over the counter head lice removal products available.
But you should know exactly what it is that you are putting on your child’s head when you use a chemically based shampoo.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends Nix for the treatment of lice; in fact they suggest that it is the most effective treatment. But don’t forget, this product is a pesticide! While many parents think that this is the only treatment to get rid of head lice there are also many that prefer to look for safer alternate lice treatments.
One of your children may have allergies. In which case you most likely avoid the use of chemicals around the house as well as using them on your child. One of the simplest alternatives to using chemical based products is to remove the lice or nits by combing them out with a dedicated lice comb or picking them out with a pair of tweezers.
This would need to be done regularly over several days to make sure you remove them all and this can be very time consuming. You would still have to comb out the nits even if you used a proper lice shampoo first.
The live adult insects are called lice and the actual eggs are known as nits.
There are a few safe and natural head lice home remedies. These involve putting things in your children’s hair like Vaseline, Olive Oil or Mayonnaise. This is used to smother the lice. It can be used under a shower cap and left to work overnight and then the next day it can be washed out.
This can be rather messy, but this can work well because the process of getting the product out of your child’s hair can remove the nits and lice at the same time. You can also use vinegar to remove any of the greasy remedies you have used to kill the lice and this can also make it more difficult for new nits to stick to the hair.
There is a prescription medication for treating head lice called Ulesfia which you can ask your child’s doctor about. This is a non-pesticide prescription treatment for head lice. The hair should be soaked completely in the product and then needs to be washed out after 10 minutes. This treatment asphyxiates the lice and after 7 days it needs to be re-applied.
There are some slightly less proven treatments for removing head lice and these are based around herbal home remedies. Various types of essential oils including tea tree oil are what they would be typically based around. These natural treatments are not actually FDA regulated and as such have not been proven to work.
Here are some other things you can do if you want to stop your child from getting lice:
Girls can avoid infestation by wearing their hair up and using hair gel. Make sure you tell your children not to share other people’s combs or hair brushes.
Tell them to avoid things like hats, hair ties or scarves that could come into contact with their scalp or hair.
Lice do not jump like a flea and they don’t have wings so they don’t fly either. Direct contact is the way they move from one host to another.
Unless you are absolutely positive your child has lice it is not necessary to treat them for it so be careful if you are thinking of using a shampoo specifically for lice removal. To correctly identify lice and nits it is extremely important that you research properly.

Home Remedies For Head Lice
With school back in session, that little 4 letter word is back too L-I-C-E. After reading the ingredients on the back of over the counter medicines used to fight lice, many people are hoping for a chemical free alternative. Let’s explore one lice preventative and a several home remedies to try if you already have the little visitors at your house.
I have heard Listerine contains essential oils including thymol, eucalyptol, menthol and methyl salicylate, which may help prevent lice. Many people claim success from putting it into a spray bottle and spraying their children’s hair once a week. If you do try this, do not rinse the Listerine out of the hair, it will dry and be unnoticeable.
But what if you already have lice? Does washing your hair with white vinegar work? Some say the acid in vinegar will dissolve the ‘glue’ holding eggs to the hair. This might be a positive first step. Nits are attached to the hair close to the scalp with a glue that can be hard to remove. But you will still need to comb out the nits and kill any lice on the head.
What common refrigerator item can kill lice? Some people believe mayonnaise has been known to help? Two cups of mayonnaise (adjust for shorter or longer hair) massaged in the scalp and left on for several hours with a shower cap may penetrate the exoskeleton of the lice rendering it dead. It is possible that mayonnaise may help smother the lice. A plus to the mayonnaise is it will leave your hair feeling extra soft!
Pure tea tree oil is another home remedy said to kill lice. Some people suggest mixing 8 to 10 drops with olive oil and rub on scalp. Cover with a shower cap and leave on 30 minutes. The trick to getting rid of lice is to make sure you have killed the egg laying bug and removed all eggs from your head. While home remedies may help you get on your way to a lice free head they may not be enough. The right combination of essential oils and enzymes however is a good alternative to chemical products. Some good ingredients are lavender, tea tree oil, neem oil, karanja, eucalyptus, peppermint, and coconut oil.
